चोक कुण्डली (Choke Coil)
दिष्ट धारा परिपथ में हम धारा को नियंत्रित करने के लिए प्रतिरोध का उपयोग करते हैं,
किन्तु ऐसा करने से विद्युत् ऊर्जा का ऊष्मा ऊर्जा में अपव्यय होने लगता है।
हमारे पास इसके अतिरिक्त और कोई साधन नहीं है, जिससे परिपथ में बहने वाली धारा को नियंत्रित (कम या अधिक) किया जा सके।
प्रत्यावर्ती धारा परिपथ में भी धारा को नियंत्रित करने के लिए प्रतिरोध का उपयोग किया जा सकता है,
लेकिन दिष्ट-धारा परिपथ की भाँति इसमें भी विद्युत् ऊर्जा का ऊष्मा ऊर्जा में अपव्यय होगा।
किन्तु यदि ए. सी. परिपथ में प्रतिरोध के स्थान पर प्रेरकत्व का उपयोग करें तो कोई विद्युत् ऊर्जा अपव्यय नहीं होगी, क्योंकि शुद्ध प्रेरकत्व युक्त ए. सौ. परिपथ में वि. वा. बल और धारा के मध्य 90° का कलान्तर होता है।
अतः
Pav = Vrms x Irms X cos 90° = 0
ए. सी. परिपथ में धारा को नियंत्रित करने के लिए प्रयुक्त प्रेरकत्व को चोक कुण्डली कहते हैं।
इसका प्रेरकत्व उच्च तथा ओमीय प्रतिरोध लगभग शून्य होता है।
चोक कुण्डली उच्च प्रेरकत्व की एक कुण्डली होती है जो ताँबे के विद्युत्-रोधी मोटे तार के अनेक फेरे नर्म लोहे के क्रोड पर लपेटकर बनायी जाती है।
नर्म लोहे के क्रोड लेने और उस पर तार के अधिक फेरे लपेटने से उसका प्रेरकत्व अधिक हो जाता है।
साथ ही ताँबे के मोटे तार लेने से इसका प्रतिरोध नगण्य हो जाता है।
व्यवहार में चोक कुण्डली का प्रतिरोध कभी भी शून्य नहीं हो सकता।
अतः विद्युत् ऊर्जा के कुछ भाग का ऊष्मा ऊर्जा में अपव्यय होता रहता है।
क्रोड को शैथिल्य हानि (Hysteresis Loss) और भँवर-धाराओं के कारण भी कुछ विद्युत् ऊर्जा का अपव्यय होता है।
क्रोड को पटलित (Laminated) करके भँवर धाराओं के कारण होने वाली ऊर्जा क्षय को कम किया जाता है।
उपयोग-
मरकरी लैम्प और ट्यूब लाइट के साथ श्रेणी क्रम में चोक कुण्डली लगाकर इनमें बहने वाली धारा को नियन्त्रित A.C. किया जाता है,
जिससे ये सुरक्षित रहते हैं।
साथ ही चोक कुण्डली के उपयोग से विद्युत् ऊर्जा का अपव्यय नगण्य होता है।
