MODALS
क्रियार्थ द्योतक (Modals) मुख्य क्रियाओं के पूर्व प्रयुक्त होकर कार्य करने की विधि या ढंग (Mode or manner) को अभिव्यक्त करते हैं।
ये योग्यता, सामर्थ्य, सम्भावना, आज्ञा, कर्तव्य, नैतिक धर्म आदि विचारों को प्रकट करते हैं। Can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must, ought (to), need, dare एवं used (to) शब्द Modals कहलाते हैं।
Could, might, would एवं should क्रमश: can, may, will और shall के past tense रूप है। शेष बचे हुए Modals में से must ought (to), need और dare के past tense रूप नहीं होते,
जबकि used (to) का present tense रूप नहीं होता।
निम्नलिखित सारणी के द्वितीय स्तम्भ में ‘Modal Auxiliaries’ का प्रयोग स्पष्ट किया गया हैं –

विशेष-
क्रियार्थ द्योतक शब्दों के रूप में कभी परिवर्तन नहीं होता है ।
निम्न तालिका विभिन्न modals के प्रयोग की जानकारी देती है।

Modal के रूप में need तथा dare केवल प्रश्नवाचक तथा नकारात्मक वाक्यों में उपयोग किए जाते हैं।
‘Used to’ केवल भूतकाल में प्रयुक्त होता है।
have to अनिवार्यता व्यक्त करने के लिए सभी कालों में उपयोग किया जा सकता है।

USES OF MODALS
Can and could
(1) Can का प्रयोग वर्तमान क्षमता को व्यक्त करता है जबकि could भूतकाल में क्षमता को व्यक्त करता है। भविष्य में क्षमता को व्यक्त करने के लिए will be able to का प्रयोग होता है। can तथा could के ये सर्वसामान्य उपयोग हैं।
(2) इनका उपयोग अनौपचारिक वार्तालाप में अनुमति (permission) के लिए भी सम्भव है।
(3) Could का उपयोग request (अनुनय) या आग्रह को भी व्यक्त करता है।
Use of Can –
(A) आज्ञा या अनुमति (permission) अभिव्यक्त करने के लिए, जैसे-
(i) You can go.
(I give you permission to go)
(ii) Can I speak to you for a moment ?
(I seek you permission to speak to you)
(iii) You can not touch the flowers.
(I do not give you permission to touch the flowers)
(iv) You can not meet him now, he is attending an important meeting.
(You are not permitted to meet him as he attending an important meeting)
(B) क्षमता या योग्यता (power or ability) प्रकट करने के लिए, जैसे-
(i) He can lift this box.
(He has power to lift this box.)
(ii) She can solve the sums.
(She is able to solve the sums)
(iii) They can speak English well.
(They know how to speak English.)
(iv) I can’t come this evening because I have an urgent piece of work at home.
(I am unable to come this evening due to an urgent piece of work at home)
(C) सम्भावना या असम्भावना (possibility or impossibility) अभिव्यक्त करने के लिए जैसे-
(i) Accidents can happen at any time.(Possibility)
(ii) I think I can get you a ticket for the film.(Possibility)
(iii) She can’t be his mother, she is too young.(Impossibility)
(iv) He can’t have let yet, I saw him only five minutes ago,
(Impossibility)
(D) निवेदन व अनुरोध अथवा आग्रह (request or appeal) को अभिव्यक्त करने हेतु :
जैसे-
(i) Can I take your pen ?(Request)
(ii) Can you help me in my work (Appeal)

Use of Could
(A) क्षमता (ability), आज्ञा (permission) एवं संभावना (possibility) प्रकट करने के लिए;
जैसे-
(i) He could swim, when he was young
(Ability)
(ii) They could go out, whenever they wanted.
(Permission)
(iii) If we had the money, we could buy that car.
(Possibility)
Note: जब वाक्यों में हो सकता था, सकती थी, सकते थे आदि में इस बात का बोध होता है। कि भूतकाल (Past tense) में कोई सम्भावना (Possibility) थी और वह पूरी नहीं हो सकी, तब Could have + V 3rd प्रयुक्त होती है; जैसे-
(i) He could have written this letter.
वह इस पत्र को लिख सकता था।
(लेकिन, लिखा नहीं)
(ii) You could have received your brother at the railway station.
तुम अपने भाई को रेलवे स्टेशन पर से ला सकते थे।
(पर नहीं लेने गए)
(B) निवेदन व अनुरोध अथवा आग्रह (request or appeal) को अभिव्यक्त करने के लिए;
जैसे-
(i) Could you tell me the time?
(Request)
(ii) Could I sit on the chair ?
(Request)
(iii) Could you help me in solving this sum ?
(Appeal)
(iv) Could you wait for me a few minutes ?
(Appeal)

Use of May and Might
(a) May का उपयोग औपचारिक रूप से अनुमति प्राप्त करने/देने में होता है। Might उपयोग अत्यन्त विनम्र प्रार्थना (polite request) को व्यक्त करता है।
(b) ‘Might’, may के भूतकाल रूप की तरह भी प्रयुक्त होता है।
(c) May might दोनों की उपयोग सम्भावना व्यक्त करता है। इस अर्थ में might क्षीण सम्भावना (remote possibility) व्यक्त करता है।
Examples of the use:
(1) May I come in,Sir ?
श्रीमान् क्या मैं अन्दर आ सकता हूँ ?
(Seeking permission)
(2) You may go home when you have finished your work.
जब आपका काम पूरा हो जाए तो आप घर जा सकते हैं। (Giving permission)
(3) He said that you might go home.
उसने कहा कि वह घर जा सकता था।
(as past form of may)
(4) The sky is overcast. It may rain.
आकाश में बादल हैं, वर्षा हो सकती है।
(Possibility)
(5) There may be a storm tonight.
आज की रात तूफान आ सकता है।
(Possibility)
(6) He has not promised but he might come.
(Slight possibility)
उसने वादा नहीं किया है, परन्तु वह आ सकता है।
(d) ‘May’ is used to express a wish if it is of personal nature and concerns someone else.
Examples:
(1) May you live long !
आप दीर्घ जीवी हों।
(2) May you prosper, my son !
मेरे बेटे, तुम फूलो फलो।

‘Shall’ and ‘Will’
(a) ‘Will ‘is used with the first person to express willingness, intention, determination, promise and threat.
(first person के साथ ‘Will का प्रयोग इच्छा, इरादा निश्चय, प्रतिज्ञा तथा धमकी प्रकट करने के लिए किया जाता है।)
Examples:
(1) I will supply the things you need.
आपको जिन वस्तुओं की आवश्यकता है, उनकी पूर्ति मैं करूँगा। (Promise and Willingness)
(2) We will fight till last.
हम अन्त समय तक लड़ेंगे।
(Determination)
(3) We will give him a warm reception.
हम उसका हार्दिक स्वागत करेंगे।
(Intention)
(4) I will report against you, if you do not mend your ways. (Threat )
(b) ‘Shall’ is used with the second person and third person to express assurance or promise, threat, warning, order and command and determination.
(‘Shall का प्रयोग second person’ तथा ‘third person’ के साथ आश्वासन अथवा प्रतिज्ञा, धमकी, चेतावनी, आज्ञा और निश्चय बताने के लिए किया जाता है ।)
Examples:
(I) I say you shall do it.
(Command)
मैं कहता हूँ कि तुम इसे करोगे।
(2) They shall not touch my things again. वे अब मेरी चीजों को दुबारा नहीं छुयेंगे।
(Command)
(3) Ask for a reward and you shall have it.
तुम कोई पुरस्कार माँगो और वह तुम्हें मिलेगा।
(Assurance)
(4) You shall get a bicyle if you get an ‘A’ grade.
(Promise)
यदि तुम ‘A’ ग्रेड पाओगे तो तुम्हें एक साइकिल मिलेगी।
(5) He shall be punished for his misbehaviour.
(Threat)
अपने बुरे व्यवहार के लिए उसे सजा मिलेगी।
(6) As you sow, so shall you reap.
जैसा करोगे, वैसा भरोगे।
(Warning)
(c) In asking questions, ‘shall’ is used with the first person and the third person when we want to know what the person addressed wishes or suggests or thinks?
(प्रश्न पूछने में ‘shall’ का प्रयोग ‘first person’ के साथ उस समय किया जाता है, जब हम यह जानना चाहते हैं कि वह व्यक्ति क्या चाहता है, क्या सुझाव देता है अथवा क्या सोचता है?)
Examples:
Shall I fetch a doctor?
क्या मैं डॉक्टर को लिवा लाऊँ ?
इसका तात्पर्य यह है कि क्या आप चाहते हैं कि मैं डॉक्टर बुलाऊँ ?
इस विषय में मैं जिस व्यक्ति से प्रश्न पूछता हूं उसकी इच्छा में जानना चाहता हूँ।
(2) Shall we dance ?
क्या हम नाचेंगे ?
इसका तात्पर्य यह है कि क्या आपकी इच्छा है कि हम नाचें ?
(3) Shall we come here again ?
क्या हम पुनः यहाँ आयेंगे ?
(4) Shall the children come in ?
क्या बच्चे अन्दर आयेंगे ?
(d) In asking questions ‘will‘is used with the second person to express a polite invitation or a polite request.
(प्रश्न पूछने में मध्यम पुरुष के साथ ‘will’ का प्रयोग विनम्र निमन्त्रण अथवा विनम्र लिए किया जाता है।)
Examples:
(1) Will you have another cup of tea ?
क्या आप एक प्याला चाय और लेंगे ?
(Polite invitation)
(2) Will you post this letter for me, please?
क्या आप यह पत्र मेरे लिए कृपाकर डाक में डाल देंगे ?
(Polite request)
Ought to ( चाहिए)
‘Ought to’ का अर्थ है “चाहिए। यह वर्तमान (Present), भूत (Past) अथवा भविष्य क (Future tense) को सूचित करता है। इसका प्रयोग निम्नलिखित है-
(1) वर्तमान और भविष्य के कर्तव्य (duty) अथवा बाध्यता (obligation)को अभिव्यक्त करने के लिए है जैसे-
(i) He ought to work hard to earn his livelihood.
(ii) We ought to respect our elders.
(2) सम्भावना (probability) को अभिव्यक्त करने के लिए, जैसे-
(i) The Jhelum Express left Bhopal at 9 a.m. It ought to be here by 4 p.m.
(ii) Considering the hard work he has put in, he ought to pass.
(3) वर्तमान (Present) एवं भविष्य (Future) के लिए अस्वीकृति (disapproval) को प्रकट करने के लिए ought के बाद ‘not’ तथा to infinitive का प्रयोग करते हैं;जैसे-
(i) You ought not to stay out so late.
(ii) You ought not (oughtn’t) to behave like that.
उपर्युक्त वाक्यों में ought के बाद ‘not’ तथा to के पश्चात् Infinitives ‘stay out’ एवं ‘behave‘ का प्रयोग किया गया है।
(4) बोते हुए काल में अपूर्ण अनिवार्यता (unfulfilled necesscity), कर्तव्य (duty) आदिको प्रकट करने के लिए ought to have के बाद perfect infinitive का उपयोग किया जाता है; जैसे-
(i) I ought to have paid, my taxes regularly.
(ii) He ought to have stopped gambling.
उपर्युक्त वाक्यों में ought to have के बाद ‘paid’ व ‘stopped’ perfect उपयोग किया गया है।
Note : Ought to’ के स्थान पर ‘should’ का प्रयोग किया जा सकता है, लेकिन should के बाद infinitive बिना to के प्रयुक्त किया जाता है।

Must (चाहिए)
‘Must’ वर्तमान अथवा भविष्य को इंगित करता है। यह मुख्य क्रिया (main verb) वर्तमान (present perfect) के साथ यह बीते हुए समय (past) को भी सूचित करता है। इसका प्रयोग निम्नलिखित है-
(1) बाध्यता (obligation) अथवा अनिवार्यता (necessity); जैसे-
(i) You must obey the laws of our country.(Obligation)
(ii) The village must have proper water supply. (Necessity)
(2) मजबूरी (compulsion); जैसे-
(i) You must despatch all these letters before you leave the office.
(Compulsion)
(ii) We must fight for liberty.
(Compulsion)
(3) दृढ़ निश्चय (determination), जैसे-
(i) I must see you again before I leave for Indore.
(ii) I must return today.
(4) कर्तव्य (duty); जैसे-
(i) We must practise virtue.
(ii) A man must serve his country.
(5) सम्भावना (probability) अथवा निष्कर्ष (Inference); जैसे-
(i) He must be at least forty years old.
(ii) My friend must have reached Raipur by this time.
(6) वर्तमान और भविष्य के लिए निषेध (prohibition), अभिव्यक्त करने हेतु ‘must’ के बाद not तथा simple infinitive प्रयुक्त किया जाता है; जैसे-
(i) You must not get off the train while it is moving.
(ii) You must not drive so fast. There is yet a plenty of time.
(7) बीते हुए समय (past) को इंगित करने के लिए must have के साथ perfect infinitive का प्रयोग होता हैं; जैसे-
He must have gone home.
उसे घर अवश्य जाना चाहिए था।
Dare
‘Dare’ का अर्थ साहस करना है।
“Dare’ का प्रयोग पूर्ण क्रिया तथा क्रियार्थ द्योतक दोनों रूपों में किया जाता है।
Examples: पूर्ण क्रिया के रूप में-
(i) You cannot dare to fight with him.
तुम उससे लड़ने का साहस नहीं कर सकते हो।
(ii) He dared to intimate his father about his failure.
उसने अपने पिता को अपनी असफलता की सूचना देने का साहस किया।
Examples: क्रियार्थ द्योतक के रूप में प्रश्नवाचक (Interrogative) तथा निषेधात्मक (Negative) में ही)
(i) Dare he speak against me?
क्या वह मेरे विरुद्ध बोलने का साहस कर सकता है ?
(Interrogative)
(ii) They daren’t kill the tiger.
वे शेर मारने का साहस नहीं कर सकते।
(Negative)

Used to
‘Used to’ का तात्पर्य ‘अभ्यस्त‘ होता है।
(a) बीते समय की घटना का वर्णन करने के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है।
Example:
I used to play volley-ball, when I was a youth.
जब मैं एक युवक था तब वॉलीबाल खेला करता था।
(b) भूतकाल में किसी बात या वस्तु की स्थिरता व्यक्त करने के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है-
Example:
There used to be a small temple in front of our house.
हमारे घर के सामने एक छोटा सा मन्दिर हुआ करता था।
(c) Question tags या लघु उत्तर में अक्सर did का प्रयोग होता है।
Example:
He used to go for a walk in the morning, didn’t he?
वह सुबह टहलने जाया करता था, क्या नहीं वह ?

Should
Should का प्रयोग shall के भूतकाल के रूप में तथा ‘चाहिए’ के रूप में होता है।
(अ) Shall के भूतकाल के रूप में प्रयोग-
Example: The teacher instructed us that we should be regular.
शिक्षक ने हमें निर्देश दिया कि हमें नियमित होना होगा।
(ब) चाहिए के रूप में प्रयोग अनिवार्यता बताता है। Example:
(i) We should always respect our elders.
हमें सदा बड़ों का सम्मान करना चाहिए।
(ii) You should never smoke.
तुम्हें कभी धूम्रपान नहीं करना चाहिए।

Would
‘Would’ का प्रयोग ‘will’ के भूतकाल के रूप में तथा ‘शर्तवाचक’ वाक्यों में किया जाता है।।
(a) Will के भूतकाल के रूप में प्रयोग-
Example:
My friend wrote to me that he would come to me after a week.
मेरे मित्र ने मुझे लिखा कि वह एक सप्ताह के बाद मेरे पास आयेगा।।
(ब) ‘शर्तवाचक’ वाक्यों में प्रयोग-
Example:
If I were the Prime Minister of India, I would have provided food, cloth and bouse to everybody.
“यदि मैं भारत का प्रधानमन्त्री होता तो प्रत्येक के लिए रोटी, कपड़ा और मकान का प्रावधान करता।

‘Must not’ and ‘Need not’
(a) Must not is used to express prohibition or negative command.
(must not का प्रयोग निषेध अथवा निषेधात्मक आज्ञा व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है।).
Examples:
(1) You must not smoke in the presence of your parents.
तुम्हें अपने माता-पिता की उपस्थिति में धूम्रपान नहीं करना चाहिए।
(2) You must not drive fast along this busy road.
तुम्हें इस व्यस्त सड़क पर तेज गति से गाड़ी नहीं चलानी चाहिए।
(3) The doctor said, “you must not smoke too much.
‘ डॉक्टर ने कहा “तुम्हें अधिक धूम्रपान नहीं करना चाहिए।”
(b) Need not is used to express the lack of obligation or necessity to do Something. “Need not’ is the opposite of ‘Must’.
(Need not का प्रयोग किसी कार्य को करने की बाध्यता अथवा आवश्यकता के अभाव का बोध कराता है।)
Example:
(1) You need not see him. Just write a letter to him.
आपको उनसे मिलने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। उन्हें केवल एक पत्र लिख दीजिए।
(2) We need not hurry, we have yet plenty of time.
हमें जल्दी करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है, अभी हमारे पास पर्याप्त समय है।
(3) He need not go there because he cannot do anything about this matter.
उसे वहाँ जाने की आवश्यकता नहीं है, क्योंकि वह इस मामले में कुछ नहीं कर सकता।
