प्रिज्म के अपवर्तनांक का सूत्र (Formula for refractive index of prism ):-

माना ABC एक प्रिज्म का मुख्य परिच्छेद , AB व AC अपवर्तक पृष्ठ तथा A प्रिज्म का कोण हैं।(प्रिज्म के अपवर्तनांक का सूत्र )
अब यदि कोई प्रकाश किरण प्रिज्म पर PQ दिशा में आपतित होती है तो वह QR दिशा में अपवर्तित होकर RS दिशा में निर्गत् होगी।
मानलो प्रिज्म न्यूनतम विचलन की स्थिति में रखा है।
मानलो आपतन कोण i₁ , अपवर्तन कोण r₁ , निर्गत कोण i₂ तथा द्वितीय अपवर्तक सतह के लिए अपवर्तन कोण r₂ हैं।
तब ,
अपवर्तनांक μ = Sin(A+δₙ/2)/sin(A/2)
इस सूत्र में यदि A और δₙ के मान ज्ञात हो , तो μ का मान ज्ञात किया जा सकता है ।

न्यूनतम विचलन कोण की निर्भरता :-
प्रिज्म के पदार्थ का अपवर्तनांक अग्र सूत्र से व्यक्त किया जाता है –
μ = Sin(A+δₙ/2)/sin(A/2)
यदि प्रिज्म पतला हो तो
μ = (A+δₙ/2)/(A/2)
μ = A+δₙ/A
μA = A+δₙ
δₙ = μA – A
δₙ =(μ – 1)A
इस सूत्र से स्पष्ट है कि न्यूनतम विचलन का कोण निम्न कारकों पर निर्भर करता है –
1. प्रिज्म के कोण पर :-
प्रिज्म का कोण A जितना अधिक होता है , न्यूनतम विचलन का कोण δₙ उतना ही अधिक होता है।
2. प्रिज्म के पदार्थ के अपवर्तनांक पर :-
प्रिज्म के पदार्थ का अपवर्तनांक जितना अधिक होता है , न्यूनतम विचलन कोण का मान भी उतना अधिक होता है।
3. प्रकाश के रंग पर :-
न्यूनतम विचलन का कोण प्रयुक्त प्रकाश के रंग पर भी निर्भर करता है।
भिन्न भिन्न रंगों के लिए प्रिज्म के पदार्थ का अपवर्तनांक भिन्न भिन्न होता है।
अतः भिन्न भिन्न रंगों के लिए न्यूनतम विचलन का कोण भी भिन्न भिन्न होगा।
बैंगनी रंग के लिए प्रिज्म के पदार्थ का अपवर्तनांक अन्य रंगों की तुलना में अधिकतम तथा लाल रंग के लिए न्यूनतम होता है।
अतः बैंगनी रंग के लिए न्यूनतम विचलन कोण का मान अन्य रंगों की तुलना में अधिकतम तथा लाल रंग के लिए न्यूनतम होता है।
अपवर्तनांक μ और प्रकाश के तरंगदैर्घ्य λ में निम्न सम्बन्ध होता हैं –
μ=A + B/ λ² ,
जहां A और B नियतांक हैं।
इस सूत्र से स्पष्ट है कि तरंगदैर्ध्य के बढ़ने पर अपवर्तनांक कम हो जाता है।
दृश्य प्रकाश में लाल रंग का तरंगदैर्घ्य सर्वाधिक तथा बैंगनी रंग का तरंगदैर्घ्य सबसे कम होता है।
अतः लाल रंग के लिए प्रिज्म के पदार्थ का अपवर्तनांक सबसे कम तथा बैंगनी रंग के लिए अपवर्तनांक सबसे अधिक होता है।
